Future Proof – Protecting our digital future

The International Council on Archives (ICA)  is an organisation dedicated to the effective management of records and the preservation, care and use of the world’s archival heritage through its representation of records and archive professionals across the globe. From 20-24 August this year, Brisbane will play host to the ICA’s Annual Congress, A climate of change. This is the first time the Congress has been held in Australia so we are very excited about it!

The Congress will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre at South Bank. It features a number of keynote speakers, including Dame Stella Rimington who was an archivist in her early career before working at the British Security Service, MI5 for 40 years (as their Director General from 1992 to 1996) and then becoming a celebrated author.

The Congress program is diverse, with  a number of parallel presentations and plenary sessions. It will examine the climate of change through the themes of:

• Sustainability: Archives recognising archival and information management challenges and working together on strategies to ensure access, preservation, security and longevity of evidence and information.
• Trust: Archives supporting good governance and accountability, advocating ethical and professional processes, developing standards and gaining international acceptance.
• Identity: Archives helping the community to connect with their heritage, discover their individual stories and protect their rights; strengthening the value, impact and influence of archivists and information managers.
